Luisa Esperanza Lopez Gomez March 14th, 2022

Luisa is from El Reposo Genova Quetzaltenango, Guatemala. She emigrated to the United States when she was 13 years old. She tells the story about her dream to come to the United States to join her parents who emigrated before her. When I was a child, my brother and I climbed a hill in Guatemala and looked out, thinking that behind two mountains was the United States. My parents made the decision to come to the United States for a better life and they left us with my grandmother for 12 years when I was 3 years old. Eventually, things started to get worse. Extortionists began to send notes of kidnapping threats to my grandmother and at that time my grandmother was also beginning to feel sick. My grandmother told my parents what was happening, and my parents made the decision to bring us to the United States. Luisa and her brother traveled with a Mexican coyote to the United States. She tells about that journey and her transition to living here and going to high school. Now as a single mother living in Phoenix, she expresses her objective to become a police officer or a nurse, as she now has a purpose to care for her daughter.
